Changes to Canada's International Student Program in 2024

In 2024, Canada made several important updates to its international student program. These changes aim to better manage the growing number of international students and ensure the quality of education provided. Here’s a simple breakdown of the key updates:

1. Limits on Study Permits

Canada has introduced limits on the number of study permits issued. This means that not everyone who applies will get a permit, as the government is trying to control the number of international students. Additionally, students must now have a letter from their school in Canada confirming their acceptance before applying for a permit.

2. Higher Living Cost Requirements

Starting January 1, 2024, international students must prove they have more money available to cover living costs. The required amount has increased to $20,635, up from $10,000. This change is meant to ensure that students have enough funds to live in Canada without financial struggles.

3. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Updates

There are new rules for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which allows students to stay and work in Canada after they graduate. Now, graduates of master's programs can get a three-year work permit, no matter how long their program was. However, students in certain programs run by both public and private institutions won’t be eligible for this permit if they start after May 15, 2024.

4. Limits on Work Hours

The temporary rule that allowed students to work as many hours as they wanted off-campus will end on April 30, 2024. After that, students can only work up to 24 hours a week starting September 2024. This change helps ensure that students can focus on their studies while still gaining work experience.

5. Reporting by Schools

Schools in Canada now have to report more frequently to the government about their international students. This includes updates on whether students are still enrolled and how they are progressing in their studies. This helps prevent fraud and ensures students are following the rules.

6. Spousal Work Permits

There are new rules for spouses of international students. Only spouses of students in certain advanced programs, like master’s or doctoral degrees, can get a work permit. This change is to help manage the number of work permits given out.

These changes show Canada’s commitment to maintaining a high standard of education while also managing the number of international students. If you’re planning to study in Canada, make sure you’re aware of these new rules and prepare accordingly.
