7 Reasons to Experience Study Abroad

The decision to study abroad is often not an easy choice. It can be expensive, disruptive and put you out of your comfort zone. However, in most people’s experience, the benefits outweigh the risks. From fostering self-discovery to immersing oneself in diverse cultures to building global connections, overseas studies provide growth opportunities that are simply unattainable within one's home country. Studying abroad is undoubtedly a life-altering experience, with numerous incredible advantages you may not have considered.
Studies have shown that students who chose an international education program often report long-lasting positive impacts on their lives and careers. For instance, a 2017 study by Jenny et al. reports that participation in study abroad programs has been linked to enhanced civic engagement, knowledge creation, philanthropic endeavors, and social entrepreneurship in students' professional roles. Many students have reported that their overseas studies motivated them to pursue graduate-level education.
Expansion of Cultural Understanding
Our individual views are often limited to our environment, and studying abroad provides students a chance to see things from a different perspective. This perspective doesn't challenge or change the student’s beliefs entirely but instead offers a chance to see the world through a new lens and develop empathy. Researchers noted that studying abroad increases cultural awareness and knowledge of diverse beliefs, living conditions, and customs (Chieffo and Griffiths, 2008). Significant improvements were seen in intercultural sensitivity, acceptance of new cultural norms, and perceptions of other cultures.
Enhanced Personal Growth
College students, particularly first-year undergraduates who may be residing independently in a new city or state for the first time, often encounter unfamiliar activities and traditions. However, these experiences, while distinct from their typical surroundings, may still resonate with certain aspects of their own cultural background.
Studying abroad immerses students in a foreign environment for an extended period, removing them profoundly from their comfort zones. This deep cultural immersion compels them to adapt creatively and acquire valuable life skills, such as independent living, budgeting, shopping, and household management.
Improvement in Foreign Language Skills
Studying abroad provides an ideal environment and strong incentives for learning a new language. Immersion among native speakers of the target language helps mitigate anxiety and enhances both written and spoken proficiency in that language.
Enhancement of Educational Experiences
Research by Jenny et al. found that students who participated in study abroad programs demonstrated enhanced academic performance and personal growth. Specifically, these students exhibited improvements in study habits and confidence in tackling challenges. Notably, they experienced an increase in their grade point averages after studying abroad, compared to their peers who did not have international learning experiences. Additionally, self-assessments and faculty observations indicated that study abroad participants showed greater intellectual development, including heightened self-confidence and self-reliance in the classroom, and an enhanced ability to recognize meaningful connections across diverse cultural contexts.
Increased Future Employment Prospects
Graduates who have studied abroad often impress employers with their global perspective and unique understanding of people from different cultures. As such, they are prime candidates for jobs that are geared to international fields (i.e. business, economics, politics, etc). Recruiters and employers actively seek out candidates with international experience, as these students have proven their ability to thrive in diverse environments, adapt to new circumstances, and communicate effectively across cultures (Andrews & Henze, 2008).
Self-Reliance and Increased Self-Efficacy
Studying abroad can foster greater self-reliance and autonomy compared to attending a local university. Research has shown that students who undertake international education programs tend to exhibit heightened resilience, self-confidence, and self-efficacy relative to their domestically educated peers. These students demonstrate enhanced capacities for managing stress, achieving their goals, and maintaining higher levels of life satisfaction.
Expansion of Global Networks and Connections
Beyond the academic and professional benefits, studying abroad also provides invaluable opportunities to develop meaningful relationships and lifelong connections with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Establishing these global networks can lead to future collaborations, partnerships, and enhanced career prospects.
Studying abroad can give students valuable international perspectives that are useful in the global job market. Many participants report studying abroad as a life-enriching experience, even for short-term programs. However, students considering this opportunity should prepare for challenges, such as adjusting to living in another country and understanding the host country's university system.
To make the most of studying abroad, students should thoroughly research the host country's culture and learning environment. This preparation can facilitate smoother integration and address any language or cultural concerns.
